Rick Warren and His Purpose
What would you do if you became rich? This was a question that my boss suddenly asked today in one of our group talks. On my way home, I remembered why this rang a bell to me. I just read the Inquirer staff interview with Rick Warren, the bestselling author of "The Purpose Driven Life". He talks about his book, his ministry, and what he did when he became rich.

Hehehe.. I've been contemplating this as well. But you know what I've thought?
The question here is not "what would you do if you become rich"... it's "why do you want to be rich?"
Is it because to live a happy and comfortable life?
If so, then why do we choose to "suffer" going through a job we hate in order to earn more so that we can retire into something that we enjoy later on... IF... we can just get a job wherein we enjoy although it doesn't pay much?
Hehehe

Hi Mike! thanks for the comments :)
I've been thinking about this too. Most people want a simple life. But the problem is they live a mediocre life, especially here in the Philippines. Probably why we have remained a poor country. I'm not saying I'm not one of those people but hopefully I'll be able to change this attitude.
I think that being rich is not bad. It only becomes bad when people become greedy trying to achieve wealth. And it is subjective too, depending on how much a person needs.
Some people become rich by chance (like Rick Warren when his book became a bestseller), some because they worked hard in doing jobs they love. But the one real good thing I see about being rich, is that you'll be able to share more with other people. And those that put up businesses, create jobs that help other people live better lives.
Bow :D

I agree.
There's nothing wrong in being rich. Its how you become rich is the problem.
Again...why do we want to be rich?
In your case, I guess its to help other people.
Commendable.
I came across an article on Reader's Digest that goes like this...
"One day a businessman visited a fisherman who is doing good in his business.
When asked about the condition of his business, all he said was that he was earning enough to feed his family, properly educate his children, and enough to live leisurely.
So the businessman asked why the fisherman doesn't want to expand.
The fisherman asked why since by doing this would entail a lot of time away from his family and a lot of stressful days for him.
So that after a few years of hard work, the fisherman could live a life of luxury, the businessman replied.
The fisherman plainly answered,,, what do you think I'm doing now?"

wow parang debate hehe.
I've read that article too. When I read it, I thought, "yes this makes sense".
But actually it's not really being rich that matters. Most people aim to be rich, thinking financial wealth is everything but it's not.
What matters is that we do our best in whatever we choose to do. If by doing that we achieve fame and fortune, then it is deserved. But humility should follow, knowing that God is the source of all things and that everything is but fleeting in this world.
This may all sound cliche, but this is what I believe and learned from the lives of other people. Too bad these kind of people, who are rich but share and serve are rare nowadays.
o mike, ano pa? grabe kapagod mag-English :P

Heheheh.. we are either naive or optimistic then. :P
And about those rich people who sahre and serve? There are lots of them nowadays.
People who set up charities and foundations.... (to get a tax break)
Those who are rich but serve the people... (to get more money out of tax cuts)
Heheh! I can't be branded as pessimistic... a cynic maybe. :P

Either you're a cynic or I'm just plain idealistic hehe.
